Sleep is timed by an internal clock — the circadian rhythm — that runs on roughly a twenty-four-hour cycle and decides when the body expects to be alert and when it expects to wind down. Fighting that clock with willpower rarely works; working with it, by keeping the cues it reads consistent, usually does.
