Equanimity As Trainable Steadiness

Equanimity has a reputation problem: it gets pictured as a face that never flinches, a heart kept at safe distance from everything that could hurt it. That is detachment, and it is closer to armor than to peace. Real equanimity is warmer and more interesting — a steadiness that stays fully present to joy and difficulty alike without being flung around by either. And like balance on a bicycle, it is not a temperament some people are born with; it is a skill, built through practice.
