Grieving The Animals We Love

When an animal dies, the grief is real grief — the same weight, the same waves, the same undone feeling — yet the world often offers it little room. "It was just a cat." It was not just anything: it was a daily companionship, a body that leaned into yours, a presence woven through years of ordinary mornings. And for many people, especially those who have chosen compassion for animals as a way of life, there is a second grief with even less vocabulary — sorrow for animals never met, suffering witnessed in a rescue video or a memory that will not leave. Both losses are legitimate. Both deserve mourning.
