Somewhere along the way, many of us absorbed the idea that ethics is a pass-fail exam: you are either a good person or you are not, consistent or a hypocrite. That framing sounds rigorous, and it quietly wrecks people. It turns every lapse into evidence of fraudulence and every improvement into not enough. There is an older, kinder, more accurate picture: moral growth as a practice — gradual, uneven, lifelong — where the meaningful question is not whether you are pure, but which direction you are moving.
